John McGlynn is a singer-songwriter. He was born in Dublin and raised in various hotels in Ireland usually remote, which his father managed. He was educated for a year in an Irish-speaking school where he learned to speak and sing fluently in Gaelic. He attended university in Dublin where he graduated as an Architect in 1990.
He lived in London for a total of two years and returned to Dublin where he worked as an Architect for a further two. He joined his twin brother Michael's group Anúna and was asked to sing U2's "Mysterious Ways" live on National radio on the morning of the release of Achtung Baby. He decided to leave Architecture and become a full-time singer. In 1993 he became the original male lead singer in Riverdance and toured occasionally with the show until 1998. He remained a member of Anúna for the duration and recorded on all of their albums including Classical Brit Award nominated Deep Dead Blue, which contained his song The Fisher King in 2000. In 2007 he was co-Producer and writer/singer on the CD and DVD Celtic Origins which was released exclusively through Borders and statewide on PBS. It reached no.1 on SoundScan for World Music and was accompanied by a 14 week tour across the USA which he directed and performed on. In 2008 another partnership with Borders and PBS resulted in a second CD and DVD release Christmas Memories. It reached No.6 on the Billboard World Music Charts and was accompanied by a 5 week tour of the USA.
To date McGlynn has released one solo recording. In 2005 Songs for a Fallen Angel was a self-release having been previously owned by Danú Records [Anúna's label]. In 2009 it was nominated in the Best Adult Contemporary Album category of the largest independent music awards in the world - The JPF awards. His songs feature on multiple Anúna albums and DVDs. They also feature on the debut albums of Owen Brady, Fiona Wight and Lynn Hilary. He's collaborated with Elvis Costello [Live & Recorded], The Chieftains [Live & Recorded], Sting [Recorded] Linda Lampenius Brava [Live & Recorded], Sinéad O'Connor [Recorded] and was guest for the legendary Moving Hearts on their mini-tour of Ireland in 2009.
In 2011 year he opened the Gothenburg International Film Festival with Ian King in February. They are currently working on two albums for simultaneous release accompanied by a full length video interpretation of the tracks. He is also working on his new solo album which will be released in 2012.
On November 8th 2011 John opened for Madeleine Peyroux in The National Concert Hall in Dublin.
